As Donald Trump becomes the 45th President of the United States in about 3 hours, Teresa May declared Hard Brexit, making the future of EU and Europe into a big question, andXi Jinping advocating globalization, I wonder what year we are in.
It almost seems that we are turning the clock back, scrapping what the world has made every effort to build on fragile base and we are sailing into the uncharted water. On the other hand, we may think that the history repeats itself as many decades ago, China and India among others were the center of civilization.
One thing that is clear to me which distinguishes today’s status from the old days is the role of technology as driving force behind these phenomena. We are in fact inter-connected and the conventional framework of “nation state” etc. may not have that much significance. Even though the nationalism and protectionism is often cited, the notion of national boundaries and of nation state may be quite different today, as physical location does not mean much. (I hear that quite a few of young generation is ready to leave their own country to live elsewhere permanently.)
If we follow this reasoning, it is not the government or the organization, but each one of us that needs to think, make judgement and decide where and how to live today. In other words, each one of us is in charge of our own life, which is not bad at all.
In the past few weeks, I have heard variety of analyses of the unexpected results of referendum and election. It appears nobody has a clear idea of what has caused them and thus what we can do to avoid the future unexpected incidents. (Quite a few elections scheduled soon.)
Today marks the beginning of the era where each one of us needs to think and make a decision ourselves. The new era has started and we are in charge, however tough it might be.
