We just received the highlights of the Global Competitiveness Report 2009-2010. It is now time for us to get ourselves ready for the Executive Opinion Survey of the Global Competitiveness Report 2010-2011. ICS is a Partner Institute of the World Economic Forum which has conducted this survey and report over the decades.  I have been in charge of the EOS for several years and December/January period is busy time to get our survey ready.  Since several years ago, Keizai Doyukai has been kind enough to  help us with the survey.

Doyukai’s support has helped us tremendously, but over the past few years, the sampling procedure has got more rigorous and thus more complex.  We send hundreds of questionnaire to top business executives of the corporations so that the sample will reflect the industry breakdown of the Japanese GDP.  Now on-line survey in Japanese is becoming also available and the security procedure gets even more complex.

So the preparation requires quite a group of experts.  We will be ready soon for the mailing of questionnaires with my personal letter asking for help (in addition to the official letter from Doyukai.)

As the deadline comes closer, we will need to do several rounds of follow-up to raise the response rate.  Though it is quite a bit of work, the data is most extensive and has a lot of value as it has been done consistently over the decades. It definitely keeps us busy for at least six months or more.
