Blog post

Today, December 22, is my Dad’s 98th birthday.  In the past, I hosted birthday lunch for him with cousins and fiends at my apartment.  This year, all of my cousins/friends had prior commitment etc. (care for their parents, their own health status etc.) could not come, so I had planned to go to his senior residence myself to have lunch with him there.

I came up with the idea of inviting him for birthday lunch at my place as in the past year, even though I am the only one and he has not been out for some time (he was getting weaker.).  I asked care people whether he would be up to it and we arranged so that he could come by cab.

It has been several months since he came to my place (we used to do it every other weekend), and he seemed to be a bit confused at the beginning.  He recovered quickly as he started looking relaxed.  We had eel lunch (his favorite) and he even finished his favorite cake with coffee afterwards.

I gave him a card (with explanation in Japanese, as I found it in NYC) and blue cashmere sweater.  He tried on and it fit him perfect (great with his bow tie!)  We talked for  while, I showed him some photos and he seemed to enjoy his time.

After two hours, I sent him back to his senior residence by cab, called care people to meet him there.  It seems we can resume our every other weekend visit to my place.  He looked very happy when he left and so am I. Great way to spend his birthday.
